Speaker
of the House, John Boehner will resign from Congress at the end of October,
according to his aides.
As I watched
him tear up during the Pope's address to Congress, I wondered how he squared
his conscience as a practicing Catholic with the demands of the extreme wing of
his party.
The Pope
preaches helping the poor, Congress has done nothing to ease their burden in
the past few years, in fact, Congress and GOP held houses throughout this
country have successfully increased the pain and suffering of millions of
Americans, including Veterans.
If this
is true and he is leaving, perhaps his departure will cause the leaders of the GOP
to start looking in the mirror and seeing themselves for what they have become
-- heartless, money grabbing excuses of human beings.
If they
do not, when the history of the GOP is written, this period will be shown as
the beginning of the end of what was once the Grand Old Party.
If he
resigns, I hope he will spend his time helping to repair the damage to our
country that his ambition to be Speaker allowed him to condone.
We can only hope!
ReplyDeleteAnd as the Pope said, "pray" and if you don't pray, best wishes, in this case hope.
DeleteWell now we know why he was tearing up, he knows in his heart he has done none of the things the pope spoke of. He may have desired to do other but he allowed the GOP to over rule him every step of the way.
ReplyDeleteHis ambition, his desire to be Speaker and 2nd in line for the Presidency won and now? what is he feeling?
ReplyDeleteBoehner is a devout Catholic. He's been trying to promote a papal visit to the US for 20 yrs. I think that he had little to do with Francis showing up in the US. But, he may see this as the pinnacle of a career and a good time to resign. I don't think that he has the stomach for another funding fight in Congress - looming in the next few weeks. Despite all of his obstinacy he has, probably, been one of the few "adults in the room". Disheartening to see that given his "right of Attila" position on many issues that he is regarded as a "moderate". Realistically, let's home that his successor is as professional and reasonably balanced. If the Tea Party promotes one of their own to the speakership it may make the last six years look like a lovefest.
